Govt has no moral right to stay in power: Mirza Alamgir
18/02/2013
Dhaka (Feb 18) : Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Sunday said the incumbent government has lost moral right to continue in power as the main opposition charged the rulers with failure on all fronts.
“The government couldn’t institutionalise democracy and failed to keep its promises to the people. So it should resign immediately,” said BNP Acting Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He made the remark while addressing a rally organised by BNP Dhaka city unit in
front of the BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in the afternoon demanding restoration of the non-party caretaker government system and protesting “misrule, repression, corruption” and the present political doldrums.
Mirza Fakhrul alleged that conspiracy is going on to ruin democracy, independence and sovereignty of the country. The present political crisis can be solved through holding election under non-party caretaker government, he said.
The BNP spokesperson said people rejected the verdict of International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) which means people rejected the government as the government itself formed the ICT and appointed investigator, prosecution and judges who gave the verdict.
He said if BNP led by Khaleda Zia comes to power in the next, the party will hold trial for all crimes against humanity.
Fakhrul called upon people to get united for tougher anti-government movement to protect democracy and independence of the country and to resist conspiracy of the Awami League-led grand-alliance government.
BNP leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain alleged that the government is hatching conspiracy to hide its misdeeds and people’s demand of restoration of non-party caretaker government.
He alleged that the government is destroying the judiciary through doing politics in the name of trial of war criminals.
Another BNP leader Moudud Ahmed feared that the Shahbagh protest movement is now going to become a movement of “Awami League”, which creates deep concern among the opposition.
The BNP leader said the opposition will consider joining the Shahbagh movement if the young protesters of Shahbagh raise voice for protecting democracy and human rights.
Chaired by Sadeque Hossain Khoka, BNP leaders Mirza Abbas, Goyeswar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, Shajahan Omar, Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, Moazzem Hossain Alal, Abdul Quader Bhuiyan Juwel and Shirin Sultana, among others, addressed the programme.
