Dhaka (March 06): The main opposition BNP will stage demonstrations across the country on Wednesday, protesting the arrest of its leaders and activists and repression on them.
After a post-hartal press briefing, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the programme at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
He said leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies will stage demonstrations in all district towns and metropolitan cities, including Dhaka, on Wedne sday afternoon.
The party’s demonstration in Dhaka will be held in front of the Nayapaltan office.
He said BNP will also arrange a Gayebana Janaza in front of BNP’s central office after Zohr prayers on Saturday for those killed in the violence over the last few days.
Over 80 people were killed in the violence erupted following the February 28 judgment of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 against Jamaat-e-Islami nayeb-e-ameer Delwar Hossain Sayedee sentencing him to life term imprisonment for perpetrating crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
Rizvi said the hartal was observed across the country with the spontaneous participation of people.
On behalf of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, he thanked the countrymen for making the shutdown a success.
He also claimed that police arrested over 200 opposition activists across the country during the hartal hours while more than 250 people were injured in attacks by law enforcers and ‘ruling party cadres’.
Besides, around 4,000 BNP men were implicated in ‘false’ cases.
